  1. Introduction

  3. As Ortega y Gasset stated, man is himself and his
  4. circumstance. Quoting another famous statement we can recall
  5. that "men are the product of their works". This is true,
  6. nobody and nothing can be developed out of its context and, if
  7. men are the product of their work, we could extrapolate this
  8. concept and say that man's works definitely are the product of
  9. the time they were created.
  10.  
  11. The economic, social, historical and political circumstances
  12. that surround the life of an artist -whatever his field may
  13. be- condition not only his own individual existence, but also
  14. his artistic production. Thus, we can find periods where
  15. obscurantism or prejudices curtail the artist to express
  16. himself in a certain way or, going to the other extreme,
  17. periods like Renaissance where the free creation of men is
  18. exalted.

  20. It is then through a criterium of singularity that we will
  21. deal with the history of painting in the period that we have
  22. chosen, XIII to XVIII century, and we will set off in an
  23. imaginary travel through that Europe which gave birth, raised
  24. and created the painters that make up our PC pinacotheca,
  25. immersed in the historical entourage they had to live in.
